What Is a DST File? The Commercial Embroidery Format Explained
A DST file is the Tajima stitch format used by commercial embroidery machines worldwide. Learn what it contains, which m…
Stitch count is the total stitches in an embroidery file, affecting sew time and per-stitch digitizing costs. Knowing it helps you budget, pick the right pricing plan, and verify a file was digitized correctly.

Guaranteed File Compatibility & Industry Standards

Stitch count is the total number of needle penetrations in an embroidery design. It is the most important number for budgeting and production planning.
Flat-Rate Designs: Left chest and cap logos qualify for $15 flat regardless of stitch count within the standard range.
Per-Stitch Pricing: Complex designs are $1 per 1,000 stitches.
Count Before You Pay: Use our stitch calculator to estimate before ordering.
Cap logos and left chest logos at standard complexity qualify for the $15 flat rate regardless of their exact stitch count. This covers most logos up to approximately 12,000 stitches.
Complex designs, jacket backs and designs over the flat-rate threshold are priced at $1 per 1,000 stitches with a $5 minimum. Knowing your stitch count before ordering lets you budget exactly.
Use our free stitch count calculator to estimate your design's stitch count before placing an order. Upload your artwork or enter dimensions manually
Our calculator uses the same formula professional digitizers use: area x density, plus underlay, colour changes and complexity multipliers. It gives you a fast estimate before committing to an order.
Stitch count is determined by three main factors: the physical size of the design, the fill density, and the number of elements in the design. A larger design requires more stitches to cover the area. A higher fill density packs more stitches into the same area. A design with many detailed elements, colour changes, and fine lettering generates more stitches than a simple bold shape. The design artwork itself also matters because complex logos with shading and fine detail require more stitches than clean bold artwork.
Sassy Digitizing charges $1 per 1,000 stitches for complex designs such as 3D puff, applique, and detailed multi-colour artwork. Standard left chest logos and cap designs are $15 flat. Jacket back designs are $25 to $45 flat. Use our free stitch count calculator to get an estimate before placing your order. We provide a final exact stitch count with every order confirmation before the work begins.
3,000 to 8,000 stitches
20,000 to 60,000 stitches
The most accurate way to estimate stitch count is to use a stitch count calculator with your design dimensions and design type as inputs. The Sassy Digitizing free stitch calculator estimates based on size, placement, and design complexity. The actual stitch count may vary slightly once the design is digitized, but we provide the exact final count before charging so there are no surprises.
💡 A useful shorthand: multiply the design width in inches by the height in inches, then multiply by 1,500 for a simple design or 3,000 for a detailed design. This gives a rough stitch count estimate for a standard density fill.

✗ Avoid this:
If a design has a very high stitch count and you want to reduce the digitizing cost, there are legitimate ways to simplify without significantly affecting the finished result. Removing fine internal detail that will not be visible after stitching, slightly reducing the size, or using applique for large fill areas are all effective approaches. Your digitizer can advise which elements are adding the most stitches.
💡 Switching a large solid-fill jacket back element to applique can reduce the stitch count from 50,000 to under 10,000 while actually improving the visual quality because applique fabric has more texture than thread fill.

Yes, excessive stitch count for a given design size usually indicates over-density problems, where too many stitches are packed into a small area. This creates serious production issues including frequent thread breaks, needle damage and breakage, fabric distortion and puckering, and reduced embroidery quality. A properly manually digitized file balances stitch count with fabric type, design size, and intended application. Professional digitizers optimize stitch count for quality rather than maximizing stitch density.
Yes, fabric type directly affects optimal density settings, which in turn changes the total stitch count for the same design size. Thick fabrics like fleece require more underlay stitches and sometimes denser fills, increasing total stitch count. Thin woven fabrics like twill require lighter density and fewer stitches for the same coverage. Knit fabrics need specialized underlay that adds stitches. The same design digitized for different fabrics will have different stitch counts due to these density variations.
Correct embroidery density produces several observable quality indicators. Fill areas appear smooth without visible gaps between stitches. Satin columns have consistent sheen and coverage. The embroidered area feels firm but not overly stiff or rigid. Frequent thread breaks or fabric puckering during production usually indicate incorrect density settings that need adjustment. Professional manual digitizing ensures correct density balance, while auto-digitized files often have density problems requiring manual correction.
At standard commercial machine speeds of 800–1000 stitches per minute, production time can be estimated directly from stitch count. An 8,000 stitch cap logo takes around 8–10 minutes. A 20,000 stitch left chest design takes 20–25 minutes. A 50,000 stitch jacket back design can take 50–60 minutes or more. Total production time also includes setup, thread changes, and occasional thread breaks.
Stitch count is the total number of individual needle penetrations in an embroidery design file. It directly affects production time and can influence pricing. Small logos typically range from 4,000–12,000 stitches, medium designs from 12,000–25,000 stitches, and large jacket back designs often exceed 50,000–100,000 stitches depending on complexity, size, and density requirements.
