The DST format is the industry standard for commercial embroidery machines. However, it has a major limitation: it does not store colour information. When you receive a DST file, your machine will run in a single sequence starting with the first colour. We always provide a detailed PDF colour worksheet with every DST file so you know exactly which thread to load at each stop.
Requires PDF color worksheet
.PES
The PES format is the preferred choice for home embroidery machines, especially Brother and Baby Lock. Unlike DST, PES stores thread colour information, making it easier to follow. We always preserve thread colour mapping to make it easier for the operator to follow. If you are unsure of your machine's format, check the owner's manual or use our interactive tool above.
Full color information saved
.JEF
Janome machines use the JEF format, which supports full colour palettes and offers detailed stitch information. Many Janome machines use the JEF+ version. Always check your machine supports the file format. If you are unsure of your machine's format, check the owner's manual or use our interactive tool above.
Color information preserved
.XXX
Singer machines typically use the XXX format, which becomes increasingly less common as newer machines accept DST or PES. Many newer Singer machines prefer VP3 or PES formats. No matter your machine's format, our expert digitizers will verify every file and stitch sequence. Our digitizers verify every format for your machine.
Requires separate color file
Sending the wrong file format to your embroidery machine is one of the most common and frustrating mistakes. If your machine cannot read the file, it either throws an error or reads it incorrectly, meaning your machine might try to read it in a different sequence, starting from the first colour it encounters. At Sassy Digitizing, we manually convert every design to the exact format your specific machine requires, ensuring a seamless embroidery run.

The PES format is preferred for home embroidery machines, especially Brother and Baby Lock. Unlike DST, PES files store thread colour information. We preserve colour mapping to make operation easier. PES files are version-specific, so always confirm your machine model when ordering.
The JEF format is used by Janome machines and supports full colour palettes and stitch data. Newer models may require JEF+. Always check your machine manual or use our selector tool to confirm compatibility before ordering.
The XXX format is used in Singer machines. Some newer models also support DST or PES. Regardless of format, every file is manually verified by our digitizers to ensure correct stitch sequencing and machine compatibility before delivery.

Tajima commercial embroidery machines use the DST (Data Stitch Tajima) format, which has been the industry standard for commercial embroidery since the 1980s. DST is also the most universally accepted commercial embroidery format and works reliably on Barudan, ZSK, Happy, Sunstar, and most other multi-head commercial embroidery systems regardless of brand. DST files contain stitch-by-stitch coordinate data and color stop commands but do not store thread color information, so operators must refer to a color worksheet to match thread colors. The format's universal compatibility makes it the preferred choice for embroidery businesses working with multiple machine brands or outsourcing production to different facilities.
Brother and Babylock embroidery machines use the PES format as their native file type, which stores both stitch data and thread color information for automatic color matching. PES is version-specific: older Brother machines manufactured before 2010 may require PES version 6, while newer models accept PES version 10 or higher. Using the wrong PES version can cause the file to fail to load or display incorrectly. Always tell your digitizing provider your exact machine model (such as Brother PR1050X or Babylock Destiny II) and they will match the correct PES version to ensure compatibility. Many commercial Brother machines also accept DST format as a secondary option, though PES provides better color accuracy and preview capability.
Janome embroidery machines use the JEF format as their primary native file type for single-needle and multi-needle models. Newer Janome models manufactured after 2015 may also use JEF+ format, which supports larger design areas and enhanced features. The JEF format stores stitch coordinates, color information, and design metadata specific to Janome machine requirements. When ordering embroidery digitizing for Janome equipment, specify your exact model number (such as Janome MB-4S or Memory Craft 550E) so the digitizer delivers the correct JEF version that matches your machine's capabilities and hoop size limitations.
Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff embroidery machines use the VP3 format as their primary file type for modern models manufactured after 2010. VP3 files support advanced features like color information, design previews, and metadata specific to Husqvarna Viking software. Older Husqvarna models manufactured before 2010 use the HUS or VIP format instead of VP3. If you have a vintage or older Husqvarna machine, tell your digitizing provider your machine model (such as Designer I, Designer SE, or Sapphire series) and they will deliver the correct legacy format. VP3 and HUS files are not interchangeable, so using the wrong format will cause the file to fail to load.
DST stands for Data Stitch Tajima and is the most widely supported commercial embroidery file format in the world, created by Tajima in the 1980s. DST files contain stitch-by-stitch X and Y coordinate data that tells the machine exactly where to move the needle, along with color stop commands and machine control codes for trim, jump, and sequencing. Unlike formats such as PES or JEF, DST files do not store thread color information; colors are set manually at the machine by the operator using a separate color worksheet. The format's simplicity and universal compatibility make it the standard choice for commercial embroidery production facilities, contract embroiderers, and businesses that work with multiple machine brands.
PES is the native embroidery format for Brother and Babylock home and commercial embroidery machines, developed by Brother Industries. Unlike DST files, PES files store complete thread color information using standardized thread libraries (such as Isacord, Madeira, or Robison-Anton), along with design preview thumbnails and metadata. This allows Brother machines to automatically display the design in full color before stitching and show color sequence information on the machine's screen. PES files are version-specific and must match the version supported by your specific machine model; using PES 10 on a machine that only reads PES 6 will cause the file to fail. When ordering PES files, always specify your exact Brother or Babylock machine model to ensure version compatibility.
Many Brother commercial machines (such as the PR series and industrial models) accept DST files as well as their native PES format, providing flexibility for production environments. However, DST files do not contain thread color information, so when loading a DST file on a Brother machine, the colors will not display correctly in the preview screen and must be set manually at the machine by the operator. For the best user experience on a Brother or Babylock machine, request PES format when ordering embroidery digitizing from Sassy Digitizing. PES files provide full-color preview, automatic color sequencing, and thread library integration, reducing setup time and eliminating color matching errors during production.
EMB is the native Wilcom project file format used by professional embroidery digitizing software Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, TrueSizer, and DecoStudio. It is not a machine-ready output file but rather a fully editable source file that stores all original stitch data, color information, design objects, lettering, and editing history. EMB files allow digitizers to make future modifications, such as resizing, recoloring, or adjusting density, without re-digitizing the entire design from scratch. Sassy Digitizing builds all embroidery files in Wilcom V9 and E2 and can provide the EMB source file on request at no extra charge, giving clients permanent ownership of the editable source file for future modifications, color changes, or size adjustments.
DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is the closest thing to a universal embroidery file format. It was created by Tajima in the 1980s and is supported by virtually every commercial embroidery machine brand including Barudan, ZSK, Happy, Sunstar, Ricoma, and most multi-head production systems. DST does not store thread color information, which means colors must be set manually at the machine, but its near-universal read compatibility makes it the default format used by commercial embroidery businesses that work across multiple machine brands.
Yes, in most cases. Each embroidery machine brand reads its own native format, and using the wrong format will cause the file to fail to load or stitch incorrectly. Tajima machines read DST, Brother machines read PES, Janome reads JEF, and Husqvarna Viking reads VP3. At Sassy Digitizing, all file formats are included at no extra cost with every order. You can specify multiple machine formats when ordering and receive all formats in one delivery.
