Placement sets the max design area and affects density requirements
Width × Height is the single biggest factor in stitch count
Textured or stretchy fabrics need extra stitches: knockdown layers, pull compensation, and underlay
This sets the base stitch density. different techniques use very different stitch volumes per square inch
Coverage % is the second biggest variable. an open logo and a solid patch are the same size but completely different stitch counts
Fine details, gradients, and extra elements each add stitches on top

Calculate the number of stitches needed
This calculator uses the same industry-standard formulas that professional digitizers use to quote before a file is created. Understanding how stitch count is calculated explains exactly how your digitizing cost is determined.
1 solid square inch at standard 90 density equals approximately 2,000 stitches. Base formula: Width x Height x Coverage x Density.
Example: 4" x 4" x 80% x 1,400 = 17,920 base stitches.
Every design needs structural underlay stitches beneath the fill to anchor it and prevent puckering. Underlay adds 10 to 15 percent to the base count.
14,360 x 12% = approximately 1,747 underlay stitches.
Each colour change requires a little end and restart, adding approximately 250 stitches per transition.
4 colours x 3 changes x 250 = 750 stitches.
Fleece needs a breakdown layer adding 30 percent more stitches. Towels need loop-underlay adding 40 to 50 percent more stitches. Smooth wovens like polo fabric: multiplier 1.0 (no adjustment).
Fleece: x1.30. Towel: x1.40. Pique: x1.0.
Simple monogram: x0.65. Standard logo: x1.0. Detailed standard: x1.25. Mascot: x1.65. Photorealistic: x1.85.
Simple text is 30 percent fewer stitches than a standard logo.
Drop shadows add 192 stitches each. Satin borders add 1,200 stitches. Small text elements below 4mm: minimum 1,500 stitches each.
These extra elements are where most estimates go wrong.
Use this reference table to cross-check your calculator result against typical stitch count ranges for common embroidery design types.
| Design Type | Typical Size | Stitch Range | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple text / monogram | Under 2" | 1,000–4,000 | Name patch, initials |
| Left chest logo | 3"–4" | 5,000–12,000 | Standard polo logo |
| Cap / hat design | 2.5"–3.5" | 4,000–8,000 | Structured front panel |
| 3D Puff design | 2"–4" | 8,000–15,000 | Cap with foam underlay |
| Medium chest design | 4"–6" | 8,000–25,000 | Detailed company logo |
| Jacket back (standard) | 8"–12" | 25,000–60,000 | Multi-color back |
| Jacket back (complex) | 12"–16" | 50,000–120,000 | Mascot / artwork |

Stitch count is the total number of individual thread stitches in an embroidery design file. It is the primary factor that determines production time on a machine and, for per-stitch pricing models, the cost of digitizing. A simple left chest logo typically runs 5,000 to 12,000 stitches. A jacket back can run 25,000 to 125,000 stitches depending on complexity. Higher stitch counts mean longer machine run times and increased wear on the embroidery machine.
Stitch count is calculated from design area multiplied by density, plus underlay stitches (typically 10 to 15 percent of the base count), plus colour change allowances (approximately 250 stitches per change), adjusted by fabric and complexity multipliers. Density varies from 3 to 6 stitches per millimeter depending on design type. Underlay stabilizes the fabric and prevents stitch distortion.
The calculator provides a formula-based estimate within a reasonable range for standard designs. The actual stitch count depends on final digitizing decisions. Accuracy is typically within 15 to 20 percent. Complex designs may vary more due to manual adjustments in stitch direction, density, and structure.
A standard cap front logo typically runs 4,000 to 12,000 stitches depending on size and complexity. Simple text designs are lower, while multi-colour or filled designs are higher. 3D puff designs also vary based on stitch column width and density.
A standard left chest logo at 3.5 to 4 inches typically runs 5,000 to 12,000 stitches. Simple designs are lower, while detailed multi-colour logos are higher. Fabric type and density settings can also increase stitch count by 20 to 30 percent.
Standard jacket back designs at 9 to 10 inches typically run 25,000 to 60,000 stitches. Large or complex designs can reach 125,000 stitches. Stitch count depends on design size, detail level, fabric type, and density settings used during digitizing.
The industry standard for embroidery production pricing is $1 to $3 per 1,000 stitches depending on machine type and run quantity. Digitizing cost is separate from production cost. At Sassy Digitizing, embroidery digitizing starts at $15 flat for cap and left chest logos, regardless of stitch count. Per-stitch pricing at $1 per 1,000 stitches applies to jacket backs and complex designs outside the flat-rate category.
Yes. For cap and left chest logos at Sassy Digitizing, stitch count does not affect the digitizing price because these designs qualify for a flat $15 rate regardless of stitch count. For jacket backs and complex designs, the price is $1 per 1,000 stitches because stitch count directly reflects the time required to digitize and the machine time required to produce the embroidery. A 10,000-stitch left chest logo costs $15 to digitize. A 50,000-stitch jacket back costs $50 to digitize.
Yes, for designs priced by stitch count. Reducing fill area, simplifying detail, increasing stitch spacing, or replacing filled areas with outlines can reduce stitch count by 20 to 40 percent. However, cap and left chest logos at Sassy Digitizing are flat $15 regardless of stitch count, so reducing stitch count does not lower cost for those placements. For jacket backs, reducing complexity or size reduces stitch count and therefore reduces the digitizing price.
