Guaranteed File Compatibility & Industry Standards

Small lettering digitizing is the specialist process of hand-building embroidery column stitches at the minimum viable width for each character's stroke thickness. Auto-digitizing software applies uniform column widths designed for large text to small text, producing filled, unreadable blocks. We hand-construct every letter individually in Wilcom V9 and E2, keeping every stroke open and legible at the target height.
Every cap file is built stitch by stitch in Wilcom V9 and E2 by one of our 38 expert digitizers. No auto-digitizing software, no auto fonts. Every stitch angle, underlay type and density is set manually.
Cap fabric requires different underlay and density settings than flat garments. We configure each file for your specific cap type and fabric, not a generic setting that applies to all caps.
DST for Tajima, PES for Brother, JEF for Janome, VP3 for Husqvarna Viking and every other major format. All included in your order price at no extra charge.
Proper jump stitch planning and trim sequencing prevents thread nesting on the underside of your cap and reduces trimming time in production. Every thread route is planned manually for clean results.
Text under 6mm is where most digitizing services fail. Here's the difference between a file that reads and one that doesn't.
Most common cause of embroidery waste
Hand-built for clean, readable results
The minimum readable embroidery text size depends on: the fabric type, the font style, and the thread weight. A rigid woven twill holds much smaller text than a stretch knit. A simple bold sans-serif reads smaller than a decorative script.
💡 Industry-standard minimum is 4mm cap height. We can achieve 3mm on stable woven fabrics, but we'll always tell you honestly when text is too small to work.

✗ Avoid this:
Not all fonts that look clean in print work at embroidery scale. The stitch itself has a minimum physical width, approximately 0.8mm. Any design element thinner than this cannot be reproduced.
💡 When a client insists on their brand font for small text and it's a thin-stroke font, we can often adjust the stroke weight to make it embroiderable without changing the overall look significantly.

✗ Avoid this:
| Text Height | Auto-Digitized Result | Manual (Sassy) Result | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3mm | Illegible: thread bunches completely | Very difficult, advise against | Avoid on all fabrics |
| 3mm–4mm | Fails on most fabrics | Achievable on stable woven fabrics only | Manual only: sew-out test first |
| 4mm–6mm | Inconsistent, often poor | Clean and readable on most fabrics | Manual digitizing strongly recommended |
| 6mm–8mm | Acceptable on structured fabrics | Clean and reliable on all fabrics | Either works, manual preferred |
| Over 8mm | Good quality | Excellent quality | Standard digitizing works here |

We can digitize embroidery text as small as 3mm in height. At this size, only simple bold sans-serif fonts work cleanly: Arial Black, Helvetica Bold, and condensed gothic faces are ideal. Smaller than 3mm and the needle simply cannot resolve individual letters on any commercial machine. We hand-build column widths and density manually in Wilcom V9 and E2 for clean, readable results.
Yes. Monogram digitizing is one of our most-requested services for shirts, towels, robes, corporate gifts, and bridal accessories. We hand-build classic 3-letter monograms (interlocking script, block, diamond, and circle layouts), single-initial monograms, and custom corporate monograms. Standard monograms are priced as small lettering. Files are delivered in DST, PES, and EMB in 2 to 4 hours.
Small text becomes unreadable when incorrect stitch density and column widths are used. this is the most common failure of auto-digitizing software. Standard or auto settings make individual letters look like solid blobs, with the inside of letters like O, A, and B filled in. Proper digitizing adjusts column width and density specifically for each letter at small sizes for clean, legible results.
Bold sans-serif and condensed fonts give the cleanest results for small embroidery text below 6mm. Examples: Arial Black, Helvetica Bold, Impact, and condensed gothic faces. Thin, script, decorative, and serif fonts do not stitch cleanly at small sizes: the thin strokes drop out and serifs disappear. For monograms, classic block or interlocking script at 8mm minimum works well.
Yes. Small text strings like URLs, phone numbers, addresses, and corporate taglines can be digitized as long as the text is at least 4mm to 5mm in height and uses a simple bold sans-serif font. We avoid stylised numerals or punctuation at small sizes. straight, geometric digit forms work best. Common applications include uniform back labels and corporate workwear.
Small lettering is included in the flat $15 rate when it is part of a standard cap or left-chest logo design. For standalone monograms, name labels, or text-only designs, pricing depends on stitch count or design complexity, typically $10 to $20. Get the exact price for your specific text by uploading the artwork. confirmation comes within 30 minutes before any work begins.
Standard turnaround is 2 to 4 hours from artwork approval. Rush delivery in 1 to 2 hours is available at no extra cost; note RUSH on your order.
