What Is Applique Digitizing?
Applique digitizing creates a three-phase machine sequence: a placement run-stitch that marks exactly where the fabric goes, a tack-down stitch that locks the applique fabric to the base garment, and a satin or border stitch that finishes and permanently secures the edge. Getting all three phases right requires manual planning in Wilcom V9 and E2 for every fabric combination and design shape.

Applique combines fabric and embroidery for bold, cost-effective designs with dramatically lower stitch counts. But it requires a specific digitizing approach.

How Applique Production Works Step by Step
Applique is a multi-step process at the machine. The machine first stitches a placement line showing where the fabric goes. The operator places the cut fabric inside that line. The machine stitches a tack-down pass to secure it. Excess fabric is trimmed. Then the final border pass permanently seals all edges.
💡 The file must include all three passes, placement, tack-down, and border, in exactly the right sequence. A file missing any pass will produce garments where the applique fabric lifts, bunches, or detaches.

- Include placement stitches, tack-down pass, and border stitches in that order
- Use a satin border stitch to seal all applique fabric edges permanently
- Match applique fabric grain to the garment for the most professional finish
- Cut applique fabric slightly larger than the placement line, gives trimming room
- Use cut-away stabiliser under the garment for all applique work
✗ Avoid this:
- Never skip the tack-down pass, fabric will shift and bunch during border stitch
- Don't try to digitize applique with fine internal detail. Use embroidery for that.
- Don't use tear-away backing for applique, fabric weight needs cut-away
- Don't attempt applique on stretch fabrics without a firm stabiliser
When Applique Makes More Business Sense Than Full Embroidery
If your design has a large filled area (anything over about 4 inches wide) and a relatively simple shape, applique saves significant machine time and thread cost. A large circle or wide letter filled with thread can have 30,000–50,000 stitches. The same shape in applique might have 5,000 stitches.
💡 Applique is standard in school and team sportswear: varsity letters, crests, team logos, for exactly this reason. The fabric layer also gives a dimensional quality that full thread fill can't match.

Standard embroidery digitizing builds the design entirely in thread. Applique digitizing creates a three-phase machine sequence that stops mid-run for fabric placement by the operator. The digitizer must plan placement accuracy, tack-down density, and border width for the specific applique fabric and base garment. It is a more complex process than standard fill or satin digitizing.
Can you digitize applique for sports jerseys and garment letters?
Yes. Jersey numbers and varsity letters are the most common applique application. We digitize placement paths for tackle-twill, felt, and chenille letters, with correct tack-down sequences and satin border stitching for both automated single-head and multi-head commercial applique systems. Files are sized to standard jersey number heights (8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch) or custom dimensions.
Can applique be combined with standard embroidery?
Yes. Mixed applique and fill embroidery designs are common: for example, an applique base shape with embroidered detail stitched on top. We plan the stitch sequence to move cleanly between applique sections and embroidered sections, minimising thread breaks and production stops at each transition. Colour changes and fabric placement stops are sequenced to keep the operator's workflow efficient.
How long does applique digitizing take?
